In Arizona, the pool is part of the house. That puts a lot of electrical equipment a few feet from water: pumps, heaters, chlorinators, automation panels, lights, and often a hot tub. The electrical code has an entire article for pools and spas because the margin for error is so small.

We wire new hot tubs and swim spas, replace and add pool equipment circuits, upgrade old pool lighting, and correct the bonding and GFCI problems that show up during home inspections. Every job is permitted where required and built to pass inspection the first time.

Hot Tub and Spa Wiring

Most full-size hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, commonly 40 or 50 amps, fed through a GFCI-protected disconnect. The disconnect has to be within sight of the tub and at least five feet from the water. The tub's spec sheet sets the exact amperage, and we size the wire and breaker to match. Smaller plug-and-play tubs run on 120 volts but still need a dedicated GFCI-protected outlet.

Before running the circuit, we run a load calculation on your panel. A spa heater plus summer AC is a lot of demand, and some older panels simply don't have the room. If yours doesn't, we'll say so and quote a panel upgrade rather than squeeze one more breaker in.

Pool Equipment, Bonding, and Lighting

We wire pool pumps, including energy-saving variable-speed pumps, along with heaters, heat pumps, salt systems, and automation controllers. When equipment pads are relocated or expanded, we move the circuits and subpanel with them.

Bonding is the part most homeowners never hear about. It ties the pump, heater, ladders, rails, and the pool shell's steel together so everything sits at the same voltage. Missing or broken bonding is a common home-inspection finding on older Valley pools, and a real shock risk. We test it and repair it.

Old 120-volt incandescent pool lights can be replaced with low-voltage LED fixtures that use far less power and support color shows. For the rest of the backyard, our outdoor and landscape lighting work and weather-resistant GFCI outlets finish the space.

Questions

Pool & Hot Tub Wiring FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask most. Still curious? Just call.

Most full-size hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, often 40 or 50 amps, with a GFCI-protected disconnect. The manufacturer's spec sheet sets the exact rating, and we size the wire and breaker to it.

The disconnect must be within sight of the tub and at least five feet away from the inside wall of the spa. We place it where it meets code and is still easy to reach.

Bonding connects the pool's metal parts, equipment, and water so they share the same voltage, preventing shocks. Every pool needs it. Older pools often have broken or missing bonds, which we test and repair.

Often, but not always. A hot tub is a large load, especially combined with summer AC. We run a load calculation first and recommend a panel upgrade only if the numbers call for it.
